Dr. James Carpenter is the 2012-2013 T.J. Lafeber Avian Practitioner of the Year!

Dr. Carpenter is a Professor of Exotic, Wildlife and Zoo Animal Medicine at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Carpenter's contributions to the growing field of avian medicine have been considerable:

Mentor, Teacher
   Editor, Researcher

Dr. Carpenter assisted in developing an internationally recognized program at Kansas State. He has trained 34 interns and residents and inspired countless veterinary medical students.

Dr. Carpenter is the author of numerous scientific papers and the editor of the Exotic Animal Formulary and co-editor of Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents or "The Pink Book".
Currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery (1994-present), Jim also finds time to perform pharmacokinetic research in a variety of special species.

Dr. T.J. Lafeber, Sr. was recognized as a pioneer in companion bird medicine and the human-companion bird bond. His concern for the health and welfare of his bird patients led him to develop medical treatments, diagnostic techniques and nutritionally balanced foods. Dr. Lafeber's lectures were infused with his caring and enthusiasm, inspiring students and veterinarians alike to advance the field of companion bird medicine.
